A tuning algorithm for a sliding mode controller of buildings with ATMD

This paper proposes an automatic tuning algorithm for a sliding mode controller (SMC) based on the Ackermann's formula, that attenuates structural vibrations of seismically excited building equipped with Active Tuned Mass Damper (ATMD) mounted its top floor. The switching gain and surface SMC are designed through proposed to suppress by minimizing either floor displacement or control force applied ATMD. Moreover, selects parameters guarantee following closed-loop characteristics: 1) transient responses structure ATMD sufficiently fast damped; 2) force, as well displacements velocities within acceptable limits under frequency band earthquake excitation. shows robustness against unmodeled dynamics such friction damper. Experimental results reduced scale permits demonstrating efficiency SMC, which is compared traditional Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) Optimal Sliding Mode Controller (OSMC).
